Primary Care Paramedic Bridge (EMER 156)

The Primary Care Bridge course will focus on providing the Saskatchewan trained or Saskatchewan licensed EMT practitioner the training to qualify for Saskatchewan College of Paramedics PCP licensure. The course will focus on the new knowledge and skills of the Primary Care Paramedic Program while recognizing prior learning experience as an EMT. An evaluation of the fundamental level of knowledge and skills will be assessed through written and performance exams. The course consists of a 6 week home study component (in which the participants will be introduced to a web based learning environment) followed by three weekends of classroom instruction, lab demonstration and evaluation. The PCP Bridge student with a current EMT license in Saskatchewan will be granted recognition for prior SIAST learning and current EMT work experience. The PCP Bridge course aligns the former SIAST EMT training to the National Competency Profile for PCP and will provide training and evaluation on all new procedures and knowledge. A 48 hour hospital practicum is required. Additional practicum time may be required if the participant cannot demonstrate academic progress and a competent level of practise. An EMS practicum is required if the student is not able to demonstrate current EMS work experience at the EMT practitioner level. The minimum practicum hours requires the completion of 60 hours. Additional practicum time may be required if the participant cannot demonstrate academic progress and a competent level of practise. An official transcript will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. The PCP bridge course does provide regulatory agencies information that permits PCP licensure application but does not offer a credential that shows graduation from a CMA accredited paramedic training institution. A 200 hour home study component is the integral component that will predominantly determine overall success in the course. The more traditional in class lecture, discussion and lab work will ensure the home study prepared student is well practiced for the evaluations. As well, the student will be introduced to a new Web based learning environment.
