Water and Wastewater Technician

Water and Wastewater Technician is a certificate program. It provides knowledge and skill development in operating and maintaining public and private water treatment plants, water distribution systems, wastewater treatment plants and wastewater collection systems. You will learn how to meet the demand for water of acceptable quality and quantity for municipal, industrial, agricultural and recreational use. You will also learn how to collect and treat wastewater to an acceptable level for discharge into receiving waters.

The Water and Wastewater Technician Program allows operators to gain industry education, collect Continuing Education Units (CEU) and maintain Provincial Certification from the convenience of their home. You will focus your learning on:

  • water treatment
  • wastewater treatment
  • water distribution
  • wastewater collection
  • laboratory testing procedures
  • operating and maintaining treatment systems
  • enhancing computer application skills

The program can also be used to prepare you, and existing operator, to challenge the Saskatchewan Provincial Operator Certification Examinations as recognized by Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and the Operator Certification Board (OCB) of Saskatchewan.

Basic Computer Operation (COMP 170)

You will be introduced to basic computer concepts. The course content includes computer components, hardware, software, working in a graphical user interface, file management, word processing and the Internet. The general skills you learn will prepare you for further courses, such as word processing, spreadsheets and presentation graphics.

Graphical Communications I (GRPH 123)

You will study the techniques and standards required to communicate graphically. You will study the concepts necessary to create 2-D and 3-D drawings. By practicing drawing concepts, you will recognize lineweight and linetype standards, engineering and architectural scales as well as dimensioning protocol.

Graphical Communications II (GRPH 124)

You will study the fundamentals of reading maps and plans. Through practical exercises, you will interpret maps, prepare drawings, convey survey data and draw layouts in plan and profile form. You will calculate volume and area from plan and profile drawings, calculate bearings, azimuths, distances, and areas on topographical maps. You will also identify symbols used in equipment and pipe schematics.
