This course is an eight-hour theory session followed by a minimum of eight hours of lift truck operation. To receive certification, applicants are required to demonstrate knowledge of lift trucks for pre-operation and operation. Operating time and examination will be given on a lift truck. Certification requires applicants to complete a written and driving examination. This course meets Saskatchewan Safety Council Standards and Occupational Health and Safety requirements. This course is designed to familiarize service technicians with the operation, servicing and troubleshooting procedures of air brake systems, including ABS systems. Detailed instruction will be provided in the application of air brake systems presently used in the industry. Operational air brake boards will be utilized for practical training. Statements of Attendance are issued to those who successfully pass a written examination upon completion of the course. Successful completion is recognized by the Vehicle Standards and Inspection Divisions and is also a requirement for Vehicle Inspection Certification (70% required for credit).

Bring your own Cross Connection Control Manual

Theory and practical instruction is provided to prepare piping trades people to write the provincial gas examination. Persons wishing to write the exam must prove fourth year apprentice status in either the plumbing or pipe fitting trades or Journeyperson status in the Refrigeration Mechanic trade  for the Domestic Gas Fitters exam and Journeyperson status in the plumbing, pipe fitting trade for the General Gas License. There will be separate classes for those challenging the domestic and the general gas exam.

Note: You must register with the Apprenticeship Board one month prior to this course to write your Exam.

Now that Saskatchewan has enacted the Environmental Management and Protection Act, persons involved in the servicing of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in the province require Halocarbon certification. A training manual developed by the Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Institute of Canada will be used in this course. The training material reflects the following three industry sectors: automotive, stationary and appliance. An inter-provincially and nationally recognized (by Environment Canada) certificate will be issued to those who successfully complete the course (75% required for successful completion).

You will learn the theoretical and practical application of the OTC (Overhead Traveling Crane). Training emphasizes on practical and safetyoriented components of crane operation and rigging. Rigging is the safe use of hardware such as slings, shackles, eyebolts, chain hoists and comea- longs in lifting operations. Upon completion of all learning outcomes, you will obtain a certificate stating you are a competent operator of up to (but not including) 50 tonne Overhead Travelling Crane according to OH&S regulations.

SIAST also offers this course at dates and times suitable for employers’ training staff.

The Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association and SIAST offer the Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) course. Individuals seeking employment in the construction industry are strongly encouraged to acquire this certification, which is required on most large government and private construction sites.

The CSTS program is an interactive video computer system designed to train you in the basics of construction safety. It is a performance-based program that requires 100% mastery of the 12 lessons (listed below), which take approximately 5 hours to complete. The program is divided into lessons and topics. Students can repeat any topic as often as required. Each lesson consists of a study, check and test section. Training can be completed on a flexible schedule. Course curriculum emphasizes the structural integrity of a vehicle as well as steering and suspension. You should be a journeyman or have an equivalent level of knowledge and significant practical experience in wheel alignment and steering geometry in order to successfully complete this course. Course instruction will be delivered at a journeyman level. You must attend all 3 days of course instruction and successfully complete examinations developed to determine your level of understanding of each section. Theory and practical examinations are administered during the course. You should be prepared to commit 4-6 hours of personal study time to familiarize yourself with inspection standards and course material. You must acquire a pass mark in each section and an overall mark of 75% to successfully complete the course.
