Machine Shop Lathe 2 (MACH 1606)

This course will provide instruction on safety for lathe operations. You will also learn how to drill, bore and ream, perform knurling operations, perform grooving, parting, and tapping as well as external threading including various thread forms.

Auto Body Metal Work (ATBD 1800)

Basic theory and repair practice are discussed. Topics cover shaping, shrinking, filling and finishing skills. Exercises are done on practice panels. Oxy-acetylene or MIG welding experience is an asset, but not a requirement. There will be a brief introduction to both types of welding.

Auto Body Metal Work (ATBD 1607)

You will learn to tension pull, rough cut and various shrink methods of body fill application and sanding techniques.  You will also learn how to finish and prime surface to get ready for painting.

Auto Body Plastics/Paint Prep (ATBD 1608)

You will learn the basics of Auto Body plastic repair using airless welding techniques and adhesive repair techniques.  You will learn the basics of Auto Body paint prep using metal panels and plastic panels.

Automotive Panel Alignment (ATDB 1609)

You will learn the basics of Auto Body bolt on panel alignment including front sheet metal, doors and trunk lid.  Door servicing will be covered.

Brick Laying, Introduction (MSON 1800)

This workshop is intended to introduce you to the tools and techniques of proper masonry, brick and block work through demonstration and practical hands-on experience. If you are interested in building a small residential project (e.g., retaining wall, barbecue or intending to do your own brickwork) this workshop will be of interest to you. Build Your Own Project (CARP 1621)

This is an opportunity to build your own project in our Carpentry shop. Students will supply their own plans and materials for the project, which is subject to approval by the instructor at the first class, based on size and difficulty. Students must be familiar with power tools, or have taken a power tool class.

Cabinet Making (CARP 1609)

In this course you will become familiar with the fundamentals of cabinet construction, including shelves, drawers, edging, etc. After consultation with the instructor, you will draw or bring along a drawing, develop a materials list and create a project of your own. You will be responsible for the cost of building materials, such as wood or arborite, but miscellaneous fasteners and supplies will be provided.

Cabinet Making, Basic (CARP 1800)

This course is intended for students with little or no previous woodworking experience. It is designed to familiarize you with the fundamentals of cabinet construction. You will construct a specified project that will cover basic aspects of introductory cabinet construction. All materials will be supplied, including project plans. You will be required to make a full scale working layout and a cutting sheet.

Ceramic Tile (CARP 1615)

Beautify your home with ceramic tile. Learn the techniques for installing ceramic tile for counter tops, islands, backsplash and flooring. See how to prepare surfaces, plan, cut, and shape tiles for unique designs. Adhesives, grouting and sealing will also be taught.

Homeowners Plumbing (PLMB 1605)

Learn how to do small home-based plumbing projects. Topics include: terminology and tools, working with pipes and fittings (copper, ABS, PVC, galvanized, Pex-Pipe/Box Plastic/Kitec, etc.) bathroom installation, sink and dishwasher installation, and hot water tanks. Course will include theory, demonstrations, and some hands-on projects.

Introduction to Woodworking and Power Tools (WOOD 1600)

You will grasp woodworking, and carpentry, principles with emphasis on developing the basic skills and techniques for using carpentry power tools and machinery. Projects will include a step stool, mitre box, cord holder, push stick, and upper wall cabinet.

Laminate and Hardwood Flooring (CARP 1614)

Nothing spruces up a home like laminate flooring or hardwood flooring. Learn to install them yourself and save a bundle. This class will teach you how to plan your design, prepare the surfaces, cut and install laminate flooring and hardwood flooring in your home. Laminates and hardwood are both durable and easy to clean. You’ll love it. There’s no substitute for hands-on learning.

Machine Shop I: Lathe (MACH 1800)

This essential first course in lathe work will provide experience in selection and preparation of lather tooling, shop safety, precision measure, and speed and feed calculations. The project work will provide ample hands-on experience in rough and finish turning, parting, facing drilling, tapping, taper cutting with compound rest, boring and turning with carbide.

This course will provide hands-on experience in milling set-up and operation with the focus on machine types and construction, cutter selection, machine alignment, speed and feed calculations and machine maintenance.

Machine Shop Lathe (MACH 1605)

This course will provide instruction in safety, precision measuring with vernier calipers depth gauges, micrometers, telescoping gauges and hole gauges. You will also learn to service engine lathe, grind lathe cutting tools, use dial indicators, lathe work holding devices and perform face and centre drill operations as well as turn between centres.

Machine Shop: CNC 2 Axis Lathe (MACH 1803)

This course will provide hands-on experience in machine set-up and operation with the focus on machine operation. Practical experience will be derived from programming and creating the following external shapes: grooves, radii straight threads, tapers and shouldered shafts. Internal lathe operations will be demonstrated.

Machine Shop: CNC 3 Axis Milling (MACH 1805)

This course covers programming a CNC vertical machining centre. Basic advanced techniques are taught as well as programming methods. Tool diameter compensation is covered by both calculations and automatic compensation. You will also learn how to apply the various drilling, boring and tapping canned cycles.

Mastercam X6 Mill 2D (MACH 1607)

This is an introductory course in to using Mastercam. Topics include 2D geometry creation, 2D toolpaths on a vertical milling machine, and tips and techniques on how to perform common functions on Mastercam toolpath verification.

Oil and Gas Safety Training

SIAST has partnered with CanSafe Safety Services to deliver this four-week program. Training includes Essential Skills workshops and Oil & Gas industry certified safety courses including; H2S, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, Fall Prevention, Ground Disturbance, Fire Extinguisher, and other related courses.

Welding Basic Pressure (WELD 1607)

You will learn the fundamentals of welding 6” sch. 80 pipe in the 2G, 5G positions using the SMAW welding process. This includes proper fit-up, weld joint preparation, tacking and electrode manipulation in vertical up welding. Instruction will be in the form of lecture, shop demonstration and individual practice time.

In this workshop the basics of gas welding and cutting, Arc and MIG welding will be covered. Your job may require some fundamental skills or you may have a present hobby in which welding can help you succeed. You will need to bring leather gloves and must wear protective clothing.

Participants will be provided with basic instruction in the process of SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG) and Oxy-acetylene welding and then pursue the option of their choice. All students require protective clothing.

Women in Trades Exploratory Course (CEXP 1600)

This hands-on course for women offers an introduction to a variety of basic trade skills. Course content includes Automotive Servicing, Building Systems, Carpentry, Machine Shop and Welding. Upon successful completion of the course, you are issued a statement of attendance.

The course provides women with:

  • increased post-secondary training/education and employment potential in trades
  • the opportunity to explore training options in a variety of trades
  • a realistic understanding of the physical, emotional and academic requirements of training/education and employment in trades
  •  

Shop sessions include:

  1. Welding - you will learn to assemble and tack weld steel, use assorted shaping methods, as well as use clearning, finishing and cutting tools
  2. Automotive servicing - you will learn to perform a variety of vehicle checks as well as an oil and filter change
  3. Carpentry - you will learn how to frame and erect a wall, repair a hole in drywall and apply sheathing and drywall
  4. Machining - you will learn to use tap and die, cutting, drilling and grinding tools
  5. Building systems - you will learn basic plumbing tasks
