Medical Device Reprocessing Education

SIAST, Continuing Nursing Division has developed four home study (print based, tutor supported) courses on Medical Device Reprocessing.

Grade 12 and English Language Proficiency are pre-requisites for the courses.

A practicum component will be available after the completion of the four courses. Practicum dates are dependent on availability of practicum sites.


Foundations of Medical Device Reprocessing (MED 1601)

Your studies will focus on an overview of the medical device reprocessing (MDR) department as well as duties and responsibilities of Medical Device Reprocessing technicians. You will gain valuable information whether you are new to the area or have previous reprocessing experience. You will study medical terminology, major body systems, microbiology, infection control, confidentiality, safety and required Canadian standards related to medical device reprocessing.

Prerequisites: Grade 12 or GED 12, SIAST English Language Proficiency

Medical Device Reprocessing - Decontamination: Cleaning and Disinfection (MED 1602)

You will have the opportunity to study decontamination in medical device reprocessing. You will discuss agents for cleaning and disinfection as well as study various equipment used to decontaminate surgical instruments and patient care equipment. You will discuss the handling and cleaning of both rigid and flexible endoscopes. The course will also cover key policies and procedures related to medical device reprocessing.

Medical Device Reprocessing - Inspection, Assembly and Packaging (MED 1603)

You will discuss the inspection, sorting, assembling, packaging and storing instruments. Aspects of preparing equipment to be sterilized will be covered. You will study the various classifications of surgical instruments including specialty and by service categories. Policies and procedures related to these areas will also be identified.

Medical Device Reprocessing - Sterilization, Storage and Distribution (MED 1604)

Your studies will cover the microbiological principles of sterilization. You will study the various methods of sterilization including steam, EtO and low level sterilizers. This course will also focus on monitoring the sterilization process, discussing loaner instruments and identifying components of storage, distribution and transportation of sterile supplies.

Medical Device Reprocessing Practicum (PRAC 1603)

You will apply theory and skills in an approved medical device reprocessing department. You will participate in the different aspects of medical device reprocessing including decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and transportation. You will work under the supervision of a manager/supervisor and work directly with a medical device reprocessing technician. You will model professional attitudes and practices in all aspects of your assigned duties.
