Leadership and Management in Perioperative / Medical Device Reprocessing (NURS 1673)
SIAST, Nursing Division, Continuing Education, has developed an instructor supported distance education course specific to leadership and management in Perioperative and Medical Device Reprocessing.
Your studies will focus on an overview of leadership and management in the perioperative and medical device reprocessing areas. You will examine the basics of planning, communication, human resource management, quality management, quality improvement and fiscal management using evidence based practices and resources. The course will also examine management and leadership practices specific to both the medical device reprocessing and perioperative environment.
Prerequisites: Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Device Reprocessing Technician, Business degree or equivalent

You will focus on the administration of medications throughout the lifespan in the context of systems and patient safety. Your studies will include aspects of the metric system essential for the classification of medication dosages for adults and children. Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam Prep Workshop (NURS 1657)
This two day workshop will assist nurse graduates who are preparing to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE). The workshop includes theory review, exam practice and multiple choice exam strategies. Both internationally educated and Canadian graduate nurses will find the workshop helpful as they prepare to write the CPRNE.

Catheterization Completer Course (NURS 1640)
This course is for licensed practical nurses that require more knowledge and skill ability with catheterizations. You will enhance your skills in male and female catheterization, bladder irrigation and removing a urinary catheter. For the theory portion of the course, you will be required to complete the workbook, view a video and write an examination. Upon successful completion of the theory portion of the course, you will be required to attend a lab. During the lab, time will be provided for practicing and testing of the skill.

Cervical Screening for RN’s (NURS 1671)

Foot Care: Principles and Practices (NURS 1656)
You will learn the anatomy, structure and function of the nail, foot and skin. You will learn how to identify common nail and skin pathology, as well as structural pathology of the foot and related nursing interventions. You will learn about common instruments used in foot care and how to care for them, utilizing Health Canada’s guidelines. You will learn how to complete a foot assessment and develop an individualized plan of care. The course includes a two day lab where you will practice and demonstrate foot care, nail cutting and basic padding techniques.

Your studies will focus on an overview of the medical device reprocessing (MDR) department as well as duties and responsibilities of Medical Device Reprocessing technicians. You will study medical terminology, major body systems, microbiology, infection control, confidentiality, safety and required Canadian standards related to medical device reprocessing.

Medical Device Reprocessing - Decontamination: Cleaning and Disinfection (MED 1602)
You will have the opportunity to study decontamination in medical device reprocessing. You will discuss agents for cleaning and disinfection as well as study various equipment used to decontaminate surgical instruments and patient care equipment. You will discuss the handling and cleaning of both rigid and flexible endoscopes. The course will also cover key policies and procedures related to medical device reprocessing.

Medical Device Reprocessing - Inspection, Assembly and Packaging (MED 1603)
You will discuss the inspection, sorting, assembling, packaging and storing instruments. Aspects of preparing equipment to be sterilized will be covered. You will study the various classifications of surgical instruments including specialty and by service categories. Policies and procedures related to these areas will also be identified.

Medical Device Reprocessing - Sterilization, Storage and Distribution (MED 1604)
Your studies will cover the microbiological principles of sterilization. You will study the various methods of sterilization including steam, EtO and low level sterilizers. This course will also focus on monitoring the sterilization process, discussing loaner instruments and identifying components of storage, distribution and transportation of sterile supplies.

Medical Device Reprocessing Practicum (PRAC 1603)
You will apply theory and skills in an approved medical device reprocessing department. You will participate in the different aspects of
medical device reprocessing including decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and transportation. You will work under the supervision of a manager/supervisor and work directly with a medical device reprocessing technician. You will model professional attitudes and practices in all aspects of your assigned duties.

Medications and the Older Adult/LPN (PHAR 270)
Your studies will focus on medication and the older adult. You will review the pharmacokinetics and the pharmacodynamics of drugs as they relate to the older adult. Principles of Nursing Practice for Outpatient Procedures
Procedures (NURS 1658)
You will review principles of nursing practice as they apply to procedures performed in a variety of outpatient settings. You will study process, roles/responsibilities, legal/moral obligations and measures to ensure patient and staff safety. This course will provide an introduction to the principles of asepsis, sterilization and disinfection and infection prevention in the outpatient setting.
