Phlebotomy Training

Medical laboratories have identified a need for trained phlebotomists. Typical duties include blood collection and specimen management and handling. It is recommended that you thoroughly investigate employment opportunities as not all hospital laboratories employ phlebotomists.
The training consists of three theory courses, one laboratory course and one clinical course. Upon successfully completing all courses, you will receive a Statement of Achievement in Phlebotomy Training.
You may complete the theory courses through home study. The laboratory course PROC 181 will be scheduled for groups of students and will require your attendance for two days of lab practice at Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon and two days of clinical experience at a blood collection lab.
Following success with the four didactic courses, you will be eligible to take PRAC 1803 and will be placed for four days of phlebotomy training. Clinical placements may be at various locations and may require that you travel to other communities. You will have input but no final choice as to your clinical placement location.
MTER 180 and INFC 180 are credit courses in SIAST’s Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology, Cytotechnology, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Radiologic Technology programs. PROC 181 is a credit course in the Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technician, Medical Laboratory Assistant and Medical Laboratory Technology Programs.
Students interested in taking Phlebotomy Training should contact Audrey Hall at SIAST Kelsey Campus by telephone at 306-659-4039 or halla@siast.sk.ca.
