The Importance of Proofreading (BCOM 1608)

Have you ever wondered why you can find mistakes in someone else’s writing but miss the mistakes in your own? This workshop discusses both standard and editorial proofreading techniques that include editing and proofreading strategies and tools. Practical exercises will allow you to improve your proofreading skills so that you can create error-free documents.

This one-day advanced writing workshop is geared to those who want to refresh and polish their writing skills.  The course will cover revision as part of the writing process.  Each participant will learn what to look for when revising the content and the organization of business writing.  You will analyze paragraphs and sentences for common grammatical errors and learn how to fix them.  Participants will also review proper use of punctuation, proofreading strategies and citation and documentation of sources.

Editing and revision skills will improve through completing practical exercises and by receiving feedback from the instructor and peers. This course is offered in Canadian Press style however, citation and document of sources uses APA (American Psychological Association) style.

Business Report Writing (RPRT 1600)

Business Report Writing is an interactive workshop concentrating on creating professional formal and informal business reports. You will work through the writing process for report writing using CP (Canadian Press) writing style. The writing process includes prewriting (researching and documenting); writing (gathering data, choosing strategies to organize information and creating a first draft); and post writing (revising, editing and proofreading). Practical exercises and instructor and peer feedback will help you to improve your writing skills to assist you to write clear, concise and accurate business reports. You will also prepare and submit a minimum of one report for instructor feedback.

Grammar and Punctuation (BCOM 1609)

Effective business communication is grammatically correct, clear, concise and easy to understand. In this interactive workshop, you will learn and practice skills to enable you to write effective sentences. Examine the roles of the various parts of speech and understand how each functions in a sentence. By considering word choice, learn how to eliminate wordiness. You will understand that punctuation is an aid to meaning and learn how to correct the most common punctuation errors. Practical exercises, instructor and peer feedback will help you to improve your grammar and punctuation skills. This course is offered in CP (Canadian Press) style.

This business writing intensive focuses on the preparation and format of the common types of business correspondence which includes letters, emails, memos and simple reports.  Each participant will learn:  the writing process; the purpose and types of business correspondence; plain language principles; and how to recognize and correct common grammatical and punctuation errors.  Writing skills will improve through practical exercises and by receiving feedback from the instructor and peers.  Each participant will prepare and submit at least one piece of writing for instructor feedback.  This workshop uses Canadian Press style which is becoming the accepted writing standard for Saskatchewan businesses.
