Your studies will focus on identifying, installing and troubleshooting computer hardware and software components. You will become familiar with maintenance procedures. In a lab setting you will install, setup and troubleshoot printers and basic networks. Your studies will help prepare you to challenge the CompTIA A+ exam as well as one elective.

At the successful completion of Semester 1, students will have created their own PC network, including the installation and configuration of network cards, the fabrication and testing of network cabling, and establishing communication between the computers through a network hub. They will also understand the concepts of how data is actually processed by computer applications and then transmitted over the network cable to the correct receiving computer where the data is returned to a format that is usable by the application on the destination computer.

Prerequisites: A good working knowledge of Windows and the English language

Topics covered in Semester 2 include OSI model, LANs, TCIP address, WANS and routers, router interface, router components, router commands, router networks, network testing, router boot sequence, system configuration (files, modes, and methods), IOS versions, bootstrapping option. You will also cover IOS naming and software maps, TCP/IP protocol, layer 3 concepts, addressing and Subnetting, roles of DNS in router configuration, verifying address codes, assigning subnet numbers, distance-vector routing, link-state routing, initial routing configuration, interior and exterior routing protocols, RIP, IGRP and troubleshooting routers.

Semester 3 students will learn to list the required IPX address and encapsulate type access, describe the advantages of LAN segmentation, using bridges, routers and switches; name and describe two switching methods; describe full and half duplex Ethernet operation, network congestion problems in Ethernet networks, benefits of network segmentation with bridges, routers and switches, and guidelines and distance limitations of Fast Ethernet; distinguish between cut-through and store-and-forward LAN switching; and describe the operation of the Spanning Tree Protocol and benefits of virtual LANs.

Prerequisites: CISCO CNA Semester II

Semester 4 students will learn to differentiate between WAN services (LAPB, Frame Relay, ISDN/LAPD, HDLC, PPP and DDR); recognize key Frame Relay terms and features, list commands to configure Frame Relay LMIs, maps and sub-interfaces and to monitor Frame Relay operations in the router; identify PPP operations to encapsulate WAN data on Cisco routers; state a relevant use and context for ISDN networking; identify ISDN protocols, function groups, reference points and channels; describe Cisco’s implementation of ISDN BRI.

Prerequisites: CISCO CNA Semester III

This course is certified by the Fibre Optics Association. It includes the basic theory of fibre optics and focuses on practical techniques and issues in installing, terminating, troubleshooting and documenting fibre optic systems to industry standards. Applications such as telephone systems, computer networks CATV, and video systems are emphasized.

You will be introduced to the packed switch voice communication networking field using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Your studies will help prepare you to write the CISCO Certificate Voice Professional (CCVP) designation.
