Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner
Every employer must meet the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. There is a demand for qualified and experienced occupational health and safety practitioners in every industry because employers are building their OH&S teams.
The Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Practitioner program offers two credential options: an applied certificate for those wanting to enter the field and a certificate for practitioners who want a more advanced level of education and qualifications for a career in occupational health and safety.
Apply for the applied certificate if you:
- want an entry level position in OH&S
- have industry experience and want to ad occupational health and safety to your credentials
- work as an OH&S practitioner and require one year post-secondary education to write the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) exam to become a professional
- are a member of a working group and want to know more abot OH&S
- want to work in an OH&S department along with other OH&S professionals (specialist coordinator)
- are a graduate of the applied certificate and want to further your educion
- have industry experience and want to add Occupational Health and safety to your credentials
- want to study, prepare to write the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) exam
- work in a one person OH&S department division
- want a higher level position in OH&S department / division as a officer, superintendent, manager or supervisor
Graduates of the OH&S practitioner program learn the skills needed to provide knowledgeable advice that employers need to develop, implement and evaluate company safety management systems. Graduates will learn how to create effective teams, communicate effectively and coach employees to work safely.
When you add an OH&S certificate and the CRSP designation to your current education and experience you have an added advantage as a job seeker. The SIAST OH&S certificate courses will help you to prepare to write the CRSP exam. Students are also encouraged to take additional safety training courses throughout their career to stay current in the field. Students should gear their education to employer job postings.
Additional skills needed: good computer skills (typing, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint), good organization and problem solving skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a passion for preventing workplace injury and compassion for others.
The applied certificate is offered through part-time distance online courses as well as full-time at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon. The certificate is offered as print-based or online distance courses plus two face-to-face train-the-trainer courses. The certificate includes all applied certificate courses.
