Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology is a diploma program that provides knowledge and skill development in applying scientific, technical and medical principles to perform and evaluate a broad spectrum of laboratory tests in a health care environment. You will also gain an appreciation of the medical laboratory technologist’s role as a professional member of the health care team. The program is based on the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science’s competency profile (with appropriate topics added to address local needs). It includes 40 weeks of clinical experience.

Graduates are eligible to apply to write the certification exam set by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and for licensure with the Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (SSMLT).

Selected courses in this program are available through distance and/or continuing education. The program is available full-time at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon.For complete program information, check the program page.

This is a high demand program. The application period is October 1 to February 15 each academic year. Application is currently restricted to Canadian residents.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit may be options for receiving credit. For further information see the PLAR candidate guide (pdf) or the transfer credit page.

Infection Control and Safety (INFC 180)

You will study the transmission of microorganisms, blood-borne pathogens (i.e. hepatitis virus and HIV), standard precautions, isolation procedures, immunization for medical workers, sterilization and disinfection, biohazardous waste, safety and WHMIS.

Medical Terminology (180) (MTER 180)

You will learn the prefixes, suffixes and combining forms from which medical terms are derived. You will also learn medical abbreviations.

Prerequisites: Core Work Experience, For Funeral Service students only
