Continuing Care Assistant

Longer life expectancies, a growing population of senior citizens, more focus on outpatient treatment – these are some of the reasons for the increasing demand for continuing care assistants. The Continuing Care Assistant program provides the knowledge and skills you need to move into this rewarding field. It is a one-year certificate program that combines hands-on classroom learning with practical clinical experience. Practicums provide direct experience in home care, long-term care, special care and acute care settings.

You will build knowledge and skills related to application of long-term care philosophy in different settings, addressing individual psychosocial needs, dementia management strategies, gerontology (a major area of study), administering personal care, promoting independence in a safe environment, working with individuals with different physical and cognitive impairments and working with people of different cultures.

This program is available through distance and/or continuing education, and is available full-time at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon, SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina and SIAST Woodland Campus in Prince Albert. For complete program information, check the program page.

The program may also be offered through regional colleges or work based training sites throughout the province. For more information contact Corinne Slobodian at 306-659-4363 at SIAST Kelsey Campus, Dr. Ursula Osteneck at 306-765-1788 at SIAST Woodland Campus, or Wendy Treble 306-775-7764 at SIAST Wascana Campus.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit may be options for receiving credit. For further information see the PLAR candidate guide (pdf) or the transfer credit page.  Graduates of the Continuing Care Assistant program are eligible to apply for the bridging option into the Practical Nursing program.
