English Language Requirement

English is the language of instruction and examination at SIAST. If your first or primary language is not English and/or your country is not exempt, you will need to provide evidence of your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These skills are required to be successful in a SIAST program.

Saskatchewan students graduating from Fransaskois and French Immersion high school programs are not required to meet further English Language Proficiency requirements.

Refer to our English Language Proficiency Requirements (pdf) chart for details.

Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Assessment

Achieving the required minimum score established for a program, through the CLB assessment, is one of several ways that applicants may satisfy SIAST's English language proficiency requirement.

SIAST does not accept the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT) as evidence of English proficiency.

Canadian Language Benchmarks (pdf) have been established for SIAST programs since 2006. Assessments are regularly conducted through SIAST Wascana Campus (Regina) and SIAST Kelsey Campus (Saskatoon). Applicants to any of our four campuses are invited to use this service.

A combined administrative fee applies to each CLB assessment and official results document (i.e., assessment fee of $200 and transcript fee of $50), as outlined in our Tuition and Fee policy (pdf). CLB assessment is available to the general public as well as applicants to SIAST programs, for the same combined fee.

As a SIAST applicant or student, your results will go directly to our International Admissions office for processing as part of your application. If you are not a current student or applicant to a SIAST program, you will be required to indicate, at your assessment appointment, to whom your official results must be sent.

If you wish to book a CLB assessment, call SIAST Kelsey Campus (Saskatoon) at 306-659-4367, or SIAST Wascana Campus (Regina) at 306-775-7601, to make an appointment. You will be required to pay the combined fee ($250) to the applicable campus Finance office and present your payment receipt at assessment.

SIAST applicants and students who are not successful in achieving the required minimum benchmark must wait six calendar months before reassessment (regardless of the assessment provider). Applicants and students must re-write all CLB segments, not only the segment(s) where the required minimum was not met. You may only write the assessment three times and your results remain current for a period of one year from the date of assessment. There is no formal appeal process concerning results.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Achieving the required minimum scores through an IELTS assessment is one of several ways that applicants may satisfy SIAST's English language proficiency requirement.

All SIAST programs (except one) require an IELTS overall minimum score of Band 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each component. The Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, delivered in partnership with the University of Regina, requires a minimum overall score of Band 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in speaking. IELTS test results remain current for SIAST programs for a period of two years.

If you receive a letter from Registration Services in response to your application, indicating that SIAST's English language proficiency requirement is outstanding, you are eligible for a SIAST IELTS assessment. Your letter will provide you with the relevant contact information needed to book your assessment appointment. Assessments are conducted at SIAST Kelsey Campus (Saskatoon) and SIAST Wascana Campus (Regina), in accordance with the IELTS assessment schedules for Regina and Saskatoon. Applicants to any of our four SIAST campuses may use this service.

Once you receive your letter and decide to book an assessment, you must download and complete a copy of the IELTS Application Form. (Alternatively, you may pick up a copy of the application form from SIAST Kelsey Campus or Wascana Campus). Prepare your passport photos, payment, and identification (e.g., passport, permanent resident card) as required by IELTS. Note that you cannot use a driver's license as identification. You must bring all items with you to your SIAST appointment.

Consult the IELTS site for additional valuable information and practice materials. If you have any questions for SIAST before booking an assessment you can call us toll-free at 1-866-goSIAST (467-4278).

Applicants who are not successful in achieving required minimum scores may re-write the test at any time. However, you are advised to consult the IELTS site concerning re-write recommendations. Applicants must re-write all (4) test segments, not only the segment(s) wherein a required minimum was not met. Test segment scores cannot be combined.

Assessment results are the property of IELTS and the test-takers. Results for assessments conducted at SIAST are submitted to us by IELTS on the 13th day following the assessment. You may request that we release your results to third parties, in accordance with IELTS policy.

SIAST provides IELTS testing at campuses in Regina and Saskatoon.
